Definition of Academic Service-Learning (AS-L):

Academic Service-Learning at St. John’s University is a classroom/experiential site- based program that involves students in some form of required community service activity and uses that activity as a means of understanding course concepts

Academic Service-Learning is a requirement of this course. All students must complete six hours of service at their chosen location*.

Choose a research project at Zooniverse and dedicate 6 hours to helping fulfill their mission.
Upon completion of your service:
​
Create a digital word and image project that creatively addresses your service experience and an overview of environmental conservation. Your project will consist of two parts, each containing a gallery and text. 600 total word minimum.
Set-up:
Create a section on your e-Portfolio called “Service”
PART I
​
A. Create a gallery in your e-Portfolio, containing 6 photos or paintings that relate the history of environmental conservation. Each image must be accompanied by a caption.
B. Using the text module, write give an overview of the history and current state of environmental conservation:
- Research based events and facts
- Relevant quotes
- Works Cited (use high quality source material!)
Part II
A. Create a gallery in your e-Portfolio, containing 6 photos that relate to your particular service experience. Each image must be accompanied by a caption.
B. Using the rich text module, write a narrative statement that includes the following:
- A description your service experience
- Ways in which the service experience heightened your awareness
- Differences you would like to make in the future
