Art in Context

The term “Modern Art” refers to the work of groups of artists that were in various ways challenging traditional aesthetics and forging new visual languages.  These new aesthetic principles reflected the artists’ changing world.

This assignment is research based.  Make to review the section on RESEARCH TIPS as the quality of your research will be a factor in determining your grade.

1. Choose either the work of art that you chose for your visual analysis or a different one from the Met visit  and write a 600 word (or more) essay discussing the contextual factors that influenced him or her and the style he or she is associated with.

Consider personal factors, regional factors and global factors. Be very specific and give clear examples. Use a minimum of three high quality sources with appropriate citations (see the Campus Resources section and click on “help with research and citations”).

Include images created by the artist you are writing about as well as any contextual images that support your essay (6 image minimum)
