Midterm Take Home Exam

NOTE: This exam has 3 PARTS; Parts I and II should each be accompanied by a text and a gallery of images

Part I. Visual Analysis Essay and Gallery based on a trip to MoMA (5th and 4th floors) 40%​
​
1. Field Research: Visit MoMA's 5th floor, taking photos of any image that catches your eye (minimum 9)
Choose one image for your visual analysis
​
2. Essay:
Write a 600 word (or more) visual analysis based on one work by any artist working between 1870 and 1940​
Advice:

Integrate as many of your terms as are applicable

Support each claim with clear examples
-
Use specific and descriptive language (with correct grammar and spelling)

Consult the Analyzing Art section of the course e-Portfolio and Terms Powerpoint

3. Post on your Wix site the image you are writing about with your written analysis below
​
4. Below your analysis (or on a subpage) create a gallery with your 9 images
​

Part II. Art and Context in the Modern World Essay and Gallery (40%)
​
This part is research based. Make to review the section on RESEARCH TIPS as the quality of your research will be a factor in determining your grade.
​
The term “Modern Art” refers to the work of groups of artists that were in various ways challenging traditional aesthetics and forging new visual languages. These new aesthetic principles reflected the artists’ changing world.
​
1. Choose one artist and write a 600 word (or more) essay discussing the contextual factors that influenced him or her and the style he or she is associated with. This can be, but does not have to be the same artist as in Part I.
Consider personal factors, regional factors and global factors. Be very specific and give clear examples. Use a minimum of three high quality sources with appropriate citations (see the Campus Resources section and click on “help with research and citations”).

2. Gallery:
Include pieces created by the artist you are writing about as well as any contextual images that support your essay (9 image minimum)

Part III. e-Portfolio Development (20%)
​
Develop the sections and pages of your e-Portfolio including any or all of the following: interests, extra curricular activities, travel, work experience, etc. Include whichever aspects of yourself you wish to be known.
Pay attention to design elements.
​
1. Remove remaining template content
2. Create a beautiful home page with a photo of you and an about me text
3. Create at least two new sections about your interests with images
​

Exam Specifications:

All exams must be submitted on time via Canvas.

Extra Credit:

1. Go to a second museum (Whitney, MoMA, Guggenheim) and photograph at least nine works of art that catch your eye.

2. Create a gallery of these images

3. Write a paragraph about your experience at this museum
