Long Story Short

Part I: Suite of 4 Illustrations (4 separate illustrations depicting 4 different scenes)

Part II: Storyboard (1 single scene broken down into 6-10 shots)

Intro:

What is the difference between book illustration and story boards?

A book illustration is a still image intended for print, depicting a chosen scene from a story

A storyboard is used to bring a narrative to life whether through animation or live action. A storyboard dissects each scene and translates them into sequential camera shots

Research:

  • Choose a favorite short story, preferably one that has not been illustrated many times. 11/20

  • Read the story carefully, jotting down any scenes that you would like to illustrate. 11/20

  • Build your reference/inspo board  11/20

Specs:

Part I:

  • Narrow your choices to 4 scenes  11/20

  • Add to your reference/inspo board

  • Create 5 thumbnails for each chosen scene, experimenting with composition, scale, POV, etc. 10 due 11/20; 10 due 11/30

  • Choose the best thumbnail for each scene 11/30

  • Work up to complete illustrations12/4

Part II:

Now that you have completed the 4 fully developed illustrations, choose one of your illustrations to break down into a series of "shots" depicting the action leading up to that scene and following that scene. Your story board should contain 6-10 "shots" 12/4 or 12/8 TBD
