AS-L WORD/IMAGE PROJECT: Making a Difference Through Service

Definition of Academic Service-Learning (AS-L):

  • Academic Service-Learning at St. John’s University is a classroom/experiential site- based program that involves students in some form of required community service activity and uses that activity as a means of understanding course concepts

  • Academic Service-Learning is a requirement of this course.  All students must complete six hours of service at their chosen location*.

One of the most profound results of AS-L is:

To realize that you have the power to change the world for the greater good.

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS:

Create a digital word and image project that creatively addresses social issues that have impacted the people of New York City past and present.  Your project will consist of two parts, each containing a gallery module and a rich text module

Set Up

A. Create a section on your e-Portfolio called “Service”

B. Create sub-pages for Parts I and II

Part I

A. Create a gallery with at least 6 photos  that relate to your particular service experience. Each image must be accompanied by a caption.

B. Write a narrative statement that includes the following:

-       A vivid description your service experience

-       Ways in which the service experience heightened your awareness

-       Differences you would like to make in the future

-       Other reflections or thoughts based on your service experience(s)

PART II

A. Create a gallery with at least 6 photos that relate the history of this service (or related social issues) or a history of the site itself.  Each image must be accompanied by a caption.

B. Using the rich text module, write a brief history that includes the following:

-       Research based facts gathered in relation to your service experience

-       History of your service topic in New York City

-       Relevant data and quotes from your research

-       Works Cited (use high quality source material!)

NOTE: If you have trouble finding enough information, trying broadening your history, for example: If you have served at a soup kitchen, look into the history of feeding the poor in NYC. Or if you have done environmental service, look into the history of that, rather than the history of the particular organization.

*IMAGES:

Images may include:

- Photographs of the service site

- Photographs of neighborhood conditions

- Relevant works of art, i.e. paintings, sculpture, photography

- historical images ideally will go back to prior to 1950
