After years of using Digication and then Blackboard, Voice Thread and Wix for course implementation and student e-Portfolios, this course has again been reworked to utilize Canvas and Wix. Both Canvas and Wix are used for access to course content, and Wix is used for studio ePortfolios. Changing technology is part of the ongoing development of this course. Honors 1000C - Waterworld (a reworking of the course formerly called Silent Beaches, Untold Stories: New York City’s Forgotten Waterfront) studies the past and every-changing present state of New York City’s coastline through the interdisciplinary lens of history, art, literature, environmental science, and social justice. This course is built upon High Impact Practices such as field-based research, independent projects, flipped classroom techniques, and creative production. Covid adaptations for field-based learning and AS-L included online guest speakers; virtual tours, AS-L’s Zooniverse.

Each student creates an ePortfolio of their semester’s work in Wix. Please see the following examples:

Art 2240 Drawing For Illustration – New Preparation. Course Wix e-Portfolio link:

https://elizabetalbert.wixsite.com/drawing-illustration

This course is a new preparation of a departmental requirement for Illustration majors. I have not taught this course in any form prior to this semester. Drawing for Illustration builds upon the principles and techniques established in Drawing I and Foundation Design, and seeks to expand on conceptual approaches to illustration with regard to students’ individual expressive purposes. Character development, anatomical movement, interior and landscape space, narrative sequencing are among the topics for in-class and independent creations. Each project will have several phases, including brainstorming, research, planning, revision, and final realization. Technical skills and knowledge of materials are demonstrated and utilized as best suited to the individual student and each project's success. Covid adaptations included holding all course lectures, demonstrations, individual and group critiques via Canvas and video on Zoom. Course assignments were completed in a combination of hand-crafted and digital drawing created on tablets using the programs, Pro-create and Photoshop.

DNY 1000C Architecture and Film in NYC – New Course

Course link:
https://stjohns.instructure.com/courses/14059

This course is a new preparation of a new DNY course that I created during the summer of 2020. DNY 1000C - Architecture and Film in NYC offers multiple approaches to examining the relationship between the two art forms: architectural form and function as metaphor for narrative, dramatic, and cinematic structure in film; interior and exterior spaces as manifestation of psychological space; historical significance of selected neighborhoods and individual buildings; movement through urban space as developmental journey; neighborhood and community as case studies for racial and environmental justice; iconic landmarks as tokens of American identity. This course is built upon High Impact Practices such as field-based research, independent projects, flipped classroom techniques, and creative production. Covid adaptations for field-based learning and AS-L included online guest speakers, films shown via Kanopy and other streaming services; and AS-L’s Zooniverse.
Art 2320 Painting II – New Preparation for Hybrid version

Wix Course ePortfolio link:
https://elizabetalbert.wixsite.com/painting2

This course is a departmental requirement for Fine Arts majors. Painting II builds upon the principles and techniques established in Painting I, and seeks to expand conceptual development and technical practice as related to both observation-based and invented visual languages. This course also emphasizes the importance of individual project development with distinct phases including brainstorming, thumbnail sketches, research into historical and contemporary models, underpainting, revision, and completion. Painting II offers a broad and inclusive approach to art-making, building on and also diverging from euro-centric uses of color, line, and space. Technical skills and knowledge of materials are demonstrated and utilized as best suited to the individual student and each project's success. Course assignments were completed using the physical materials of pencil, oil and acrylic paint, along with digital programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator. Covid adaptations: although the course was scheduled as hybrid, I made accommodations for half of the class who wished to take the course entirely remotely. One three-hour class was held on campus with half of the students present and half on zoom. The other three-hour class was held entirely on zoom. Teaching, learning, demonstrations, individual and group critiques were a challenging mix of online and live.
