A developing course studying the past and present significance of New York City’s coastline through the interdisciplinary lens of history, art, literature, environmental science, and social justice. This course is built upon High Impact Practices such as field-based research, independent projects, flipped classroom techniques, and creative production. Each student creates an e-Portfolio of their semester’s work. Please see the following examples:

In Development:
New Portfolio Platform:
Having spent the last seven years using the Digication platform as a course container and pedagogical tool, as well as having students build e-Portfolios to showcase their semester’s work (see examples above,) I am now tasked with starting over with new technology. I have explored the new Blackboard Ultra and find it quite limited as far as creating vibrant and complex course structures, and more importantly, it offers students little opportunity to construct sophisticated portfolios that will be of any significant use to them in their future academic pursuits and professions. I will use Blackboard as a home base to link outwards to freeware so that I and my students can produce well-designed portfolios with the kind of features that are expected in our current digital age. I have experimented with various free sites and will likely use Wix. You are currently viewing this year’s Teaching Portfolio on Wix technology.
GIS:
This summer I will participate in a GIS workshop (Geographic Information System) mapping technology as a potential tool for the course HON 1000C: Silent Beaches, Untold Stories: New York City’s Forgotten Waterfront and DNY 1000C Art and Architecture in New York.
