Grey Scale

Value (sometimes also referred to as tone) is a term that describes the relative lightness and darkness of a color. This project will give you an opportunity to get a sense of the subtleties between greys as they smoothly transition from white to black while also giving you some more experience with handling gouache and brushes.

Procedure:

1. On a sheet of 11 x 14" bristol placed horizontally, measure 5" from top and bottom; 1 1/2" from the sides. This will give you a narrow horizontal rectangle measuring 11" long x 1" high.

2. Then measure 1" increments within the rectangle so that you have 11 1" x 1" boxes.

3. Beginning with pure white and pure black, paint the boxes at either end.

4. At this point you may use the scale below for reference, or try to find the values on your own

Tips:

It's best to have two cups of water:
- one for white and the upper register of greys
- one for black and the lower register of greys

Start with black, white, and a middle value grey, then work from white to middle and black to middle
You can paint over any squares that need adjusting as long as the paint doesn't get too thick
