Foundation Design

Grey Scale

Value (sometimes also referred to as tone) is a term that describes the relative lightness and darkness of a color.  This project will give you an opportunity to get a sense of the subtleties between greys as they smoothly transition from white to black while also giving you some more experience with handling gouache and brushes.

​

Procedure:

​

1. On a sheet of 11 x 14" bristol placed horizontally, measure 5" from top and bottom; 1 1/2" from the sides. This will give you a narrow horizontal rectangle measuring 11" long x 1" high.

​

2. Then measure 1" increments within the rectangle so that you have 11 1" x 1" boxes.

​

3. Beginning with pure white (the paper) and your very darkest dark in the boxes at either end. 

​

4. At this point you may use the scale below for reference, or try to find the values on your own

Tips: 

​

Start with "black", white, and a middle value grey, then work from white to middle and black to middle
