Assignment Description:

Working with the range of values and hardnesses of your pencils, create two 7x7 inch compositions of straight parallel lines. These lines may be vertical, horizontal.

If you like a prompt you can find an action-implication word that inspires your composition, i.e. ferocity, hesitation, anxiety, laughter, pleasure, breathlessness, etc.

1. Start by doing two 5x5 inch preliminary studies on one piece of paper. This will give you sense of how dark/light the pencils are and how to space the lines. Set up: 1" margin top; 2" margin bottom; 3" margins sides; 1" in between
Darkest 6B, 5B, 4B, 3B, 2B, B, HB, F, H, 2H, 4H, 6H Lightest
2. Once you tested out your pencils as well as some ideas, start on your 7x7 inch compositions.
The compositions should be 7x7 inches and each should be centered on a sheet of drawing paper. (2 inch border on the sides, 3.5 inch on top and bottom.) Outline the border of your compositional square with the 0.1 Micron pen.
The 5 x 5 warm ups and the 7 x 7 versions are due Friday 9/13/23
In each piece focus on one of the following aspects that can be expressed through lines:
-
Rhythm & interval – use repetition and interval distance to develop a sense of rhythm and pattern.
-
Space - convey a clear feeling of the lines moving back and forth in space through line weight.
-
Complexity – in parts of your composition overlay vertical lines to create more complex movements.
