Line Assignment 2: Dynamic Line

In this exercise we will continue to explore line weight and direction and combine them with diagonal moving back and forth in space. A diagonal Line that appears to create depth is called an Oblique.

Your goal is to break up the picture plane in a dynamic way and create a sense of movement and space. Dynamic compositions are energetic and active, and usually asymmetrical. You can start with planes and/or a continuous line, and then add parallel lines to the shapes you created. Start with light lines, and then decide on which you want to make darker. Lines must remain straight, but can cross each other.

1. Research: look for architectural structures with dynamic line configurations. Some examples might include The High Line, The Brooklyn Bridge (really any bridge), stairways, fire escapes. Take photos for inspo.

2. Create two 7x7 inch drawings. Each should be centered on a sheet of drawing paper. (2 inch border on the sides, 3.5 inch on top and bottom.) Outline the border of your compositional square with the 0.1 Micron pen.

Here are some things you may want to explore:

How can you create a sense of space and dimension?

Can architecture be an inspiration for one your drawings?

Do you want to create a spatial situation that is confusing?

How can you achieve a sense of movement across the picture plane?

Do you want to construct a composition that is based on a pattern?

How can you generate pictorial tension in a square format?

How will you use different line weights to achieve depth and space?

What makes for a dynamic composition that keeps the viewer’s eye moving?
