Echoes of the Narrative

 

Building on visual elements from the class projects and homework assignments so far, construct a painting using observation-based elements, abstraction, or a mix of visual languages to portray one of the following phrases.*

 

Your approach may be narrative or metaphorical

Before I Knocked

 

Steps:

 

1. Make a list of different visual ideas for this project

 

2. Do a series of thumbnail sketches (minimum 16) exploring different compositional ideas for this project.

 

3. Create a collection of source material to aid you in this project, including images of paintings, photographs, drawings, illustrations.

 

3. Purchase stretchers or panel according to the format that best suits your concept.

 

4. Create an underpainting from a neutral wash

 

5. Wipe off and make changes to the composition

 

6. Begin full color painting

 

7. Step back often

 

8. Rework and rework

 

Consider Expressive Possibilities of Visual Components:

 

  • Line: thick, thin, straight, curved, jagged, broken, scraped, knifed etc.

  •  Shape: open, closed, geometric, amorphous, anthropomorphic

  •  Marks: Thick, thin, long, short, drips, delicate, heavy

  •  Surface: flat, washy, impasto, scratched, knifed

  •  Spatial Techniques: overlapping, linear perspective, atmospheric perspective, modeling, scale changes, position, etc.

  • Color: bold, neutral, pale, deep, close range, dramatic
