Figure Painting Study

FULL LENGTH Figure

Steps:

1. Choose a painting from the Powerpoint below (If you have something else in mind, I'm happy to take a look)

Consider:

  • size and shape of format

  • pose

  • scale of figure to format

  • accoutrements (clothing, hair, background props)

  • lighting

  • color palette

  • paint handling

2. Do 5 thumbnail sketches getting comfortable with the relationship of the figure to the space.

3. Purchase stretchers or panel according to the format of the original.

4. Using the additive (thinned paint drawn onto a white canvas) or subtractive (paint removed from a toned canvas), quickly “sketch” out your idea on the prepared canvas or board.

5. Wipe off and make changes to the composition

6. Begin full color painting with brush, palette knife, or combination

7. Step back often

8. Rework and rework

Consider Expressive Possibilities of Visual Components:

  • Line: thick, thin, straight, curved, jagged, broken, scraped, knifed etc.

  • Marks: Thick, thin, long, short, drips, delicate, heavy

  • Surface: flat, washy, impasto, scratched, knifed

  • Spatial Techniques: overlapping, linear perspective, foreshortening, modeling/volume, scale changes, position, etc.

  • Color: bold, neutral, pale, deep, close range, dramatic
