Self Portrait HW Parts I and II.

 

 

 

Part I: Self Portrait Value Study Warm-up Drawing

 

Motivation: Familiarize yourself with the structure and forms of the human head

Materials: Charcoal and/or conte crayon, pastel, chalk; paper, eraser, lighting

 

Procedure:

Using paper 12" x 16" or larger, draw a self-portrait using value/tone.  Let the form develop via the lights and darks. Avoid using line.

 

Part I due: Friday, 2/5

 

Part II: Portrait "Study" after an Artist

 

Motivation: To learn by example composition, mark making, color mixing, so as to inform your own work.

Materials: gessoed board; oil paint, medium, brushes, solvent.

Suggested artists:Egon Schiele, Hannah Van Bart, Jenny Saville, Mickalene Thomas, Kehinde Wiley, Hopper, Matisse, Picasso, Van Gogh, Freud, Beckmann, Neel

 

Procedure:

 

  • Choose a work by an artist that you admire and would like to learn from. Tape off or cut your board so as to match the painting's proportion.

  • Sketch in pencil the general composition

  • Check your proportions

  • Mix the main colors

  • Work all over, rather than completing one area at a time

  • Step back frequently to see your work objectively
